Prolotherapy “Proliferant Therapy” – also called “Regenerative Injection Therapy” or RIT Prolotherapy stimulates the natural wound-healing response of the body to strengthen ligaments and tendons. Ligaments and tendons hold bones together and are often injured in over-use injuries, accidents, sports injuries and other falls, sprawls, sprains and strains. Ligaments and tendons are also the victims of aging, as many baby-boomers are beginning to discover. Surgical treatment and other traditional answers to treatment options for ligament wear-and-tear are not fully successful and involve highly invasive treatment techniques. Prolotherapy, on the other hand, is less invasive. The technique is based on good science and highly regarded anecdotal success rates that emphasize the improvement of joint/ligament/tendon components healed by promoting the dysfunctional area to heal itself.A nonsteroidal solution (most commonly sugar/water) is injected into the ligaments where it attaches to the bone. This creates an inflammatory response similar to a sprain. Various cells flood into the area that clean up the wound and rebuild the ligament. The effect is the body healing itself, with a little bit of help. Although prolotherapy has been used by both D.O. and M.D.s since the 1940s, many people, including most physicians, are not familiar with this treatment. Recent research continues to show that ligaments and tendons treated with prolotherapy increase in size and tensile strengthen and quicken the healing time for a ligament injury without surgery. A typical prolothrapy treatment takes three to six injections over a three- to six-month period of time to effectively strengthen hypermoble ligaments. During this time, continued OMM is used to treat the surrounding restricted joints and improve circulation. An appropriate exercise program is prescribed to retrain and strengthen muscles, including muscles of core posture. Individual wound healing depends on a variety of factors and the overall health of the individual. OMM can improve restricted joints by enhancing ligamentous and muscle functions and increasing blood flow. Prolotherapy can strengthen and tighten hypermobile joints. Together, they are very effective, offering the best possible solution for many patients’ musculoskeletal problems. Prolotherapy is particularly effective for acute or chronic sports injuries, shoulder rotator cuff dysfunction, arthritic knees and all other joints that have suffered injury or just normal age defined wear-and-tear. |
